MULTI-ENGINE COURSES
multi-engine, Multi-Engine Instructor and ATP
Training Overview
Ready to fly higher, further and faster than you could before? Then getting your multi-engine rating is a must have! CRAFT is proud to offer several multi-engine courses to suit your aviation needs. We offer Multi-Engine Add-On, Multi-Engine Instructor (MEI), Commercial Multi-Engine Initial (CMEL), and an Accelerated Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) Checkride Prep Course.
All of our multi-engine training is conducted in the state-of-the-art, G1000-equipped Diamond DA42-VI and our Redbird Simulators using DA42 controls and G1000 avionics. The ultra-modern, Jet-A burning Diamond DA42-VI features single-lever, digital controls for each diesel engine, which simplifies single-engine operations and provides a training experience similar to jet aircraft. These digital controls enhance the DA42’s already stellar performance and safety features, providing our customers the very best environment for twin-engine training.
Since the FARs do not set the number of minimum hours required for most of the Multi-Engine ratings, the courses below are a baseline, which can be tailored to the student’s experience. As with all of the training at CRAFT, we train to proficiency so the training required may vary based on your specific needs. Contact us today to get a customized quote!

For just about $60, you can get $25,000 of hull coverage for one month to cover you while you are completing your Multi-Engine training.
ACCELERATED OR AT YOUR OWN PACE
Our courses can be completed as accelerated courses or at your own pace. If you choose the accelerated route, you are committing to approximately 8 hours of ground, simulator and flight training per day. This is an intensive course, so come prepared.
PAYMENT
50% of payment is due upon reservation with the balance due when the course starts. The Flight Examiner’s fee is due upon the commencement of the checkride.
MULTI-ENGINE ADD-ON course - $8,100
This is an “add-on” rating to an existing Private or Commercial Certificate. If you have an instrument rating already, you will want to get your Multi-Engine rating with instrument privileges. There is no knowledge test and no minimum time requirement, just the ground and flight training required to demonstrate proficiency to the Examiner. Most pilots can reach required proficiency to be ready for the checkride in 8-12 hours of training. The ME course includes 8 hours however, depending on the student, more than 8 hours may be required, in which case an hourly rate for the aircraft and instructor will be applied.
If you choose the accelerated option, the ME Add-On will take 3 days to complete, with your checkride on the 4th day.
PreRequisites
- Private Pilot or Commercial License
- At least a current FAA Third Class Medical or BasicMed
- Proof of US Citizenship or TSA Approval
- Pilot should be current (Not required, however additional hours may be required if the pilot is not current)
- G1000 experience is preferred, however we can provide some study materials. If you need more instruction, we can provide additional training in our simulator at the hourly rate to build proficiency.
Course Includes
Up to 8 hours of dual instruction in the Diamond DA42-VI, use of Redbird FMX full-motion simulator, and aircraft use for checkride. Any hours needed above the 8 will be billed at the hourly rate.
COMMERCIAL MULTI-ENGINE INITIAL course - $25,500
A Commercial license is required if you want to get paid to fly. If you have your Private Pilot Certificate and are Instrument rated with at least 250 hours total time, getting your Commercial Multi-Engine will allow you to get paid to fly in a twin, and then you can easily get your Commercial Single-Engine as an add-on in about 6 hours. A minimum of 50 hours of Multi-Engine along with 1500 hours of total time is required for an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) rating. Getting your Commercial Multi first, instead of your Commercial Single initial, and then getting your MEI will get you those 50 hours.
If you choose the accelerated option, the Commercial Multi-Engine Initial will take 10 days to complete, with your checkride on the 11th day.
PreRequisites
- 250 hours total time
- Private Pilot License w/Instrument Rating
- At least a current FAA Third Class Medical or BasicMed (second class to receive compensation)
- Proof of US Citizenship or TSA Approval
- Pilot should be current (Not required, however additional hours may be required if the pilot is not current)
- Pass the FAA Commercial Airplane knowledge exam
- G1000 experience is preferred, however we can provide some study materials. If you need more instruction, we can provide additional training in our simulator at the hourly rate to build proficiency.
Course Includes
Up to 35 hours of dual instruction in the Diamond DA42-VI, use of Redbird FMX full-motion simulator, and aircraft use for checkride. Any hours needed above the 35 will be billed at the hourly rate.
MULTI-ENGINE INSTRUCTOR (MEI) course - $8,100
MEI requires 15 hours as PIC in the same class of aircraft (FAR 61.183(j)). PIC hours from your Multi-Engine checkride and any Multi-Engine time since the checkride counts towards the 15 hours required. This course assumes you already meet the minimum requirement of having 15 PIC hours in a Multi-Engine. If you do not meet this criteria, any additional hours you need can be added to the course at an hourly rate.
If you are already a single engine CFI, you should be able to complete the requirements in 8 hours. Along the way you will gain ground instruction insight on unique dynamics of teaching multi-engine flight while preserving a safe environment.
A Multi-Engine Instructor who gets Instrument Instructor privileges (usually in a single-engine plane), is automatically allowed to teach Multi/Instrument procedures. During this course, you will practice your instrument instructor skills in the Multi-Engine to help set your comfort zone when it comes to teaching.
If you choose the accelerated option, the MEI Add-On will take 3 days to complete, with your checkride on the 4th day.
PreRequisites
- Commercial Pilot License
- Current FAA Third Class Medical or BasicMed (second class to receive compensation)
- Proof of US Citizenship or TSA Approval
- Pilot should be current (Not required, however, additional hours may be required if the pilot is not current)
- G1000 experience is preferred, however, we can provide some study materials.
