Private Pilot Ground School Course
Private Pilot Ground School Course
Obtaining a Private Pilot license requires passing both a written knowledge test and a practical exam, also known as the check-ride. CRAFT students have the flexibility to choose from multiple options for preparing for the FAA Knowledge Test (written test), which they are expected to do concurrently with flight training. ASA, Sporty’s, Gleim, and King Schools offer online computer-based training courses that can be purchased anywhere from $175 – $375.
CRAFT also offers options for both online via Zoom or in-person Private Pilot Ground School Course with one of our Advanced Ground Instructors (AGI), to help students prepare for the FAA Airman Knowledge Test. Upon completion of the course and a passing score of 80% on the practice test, the instructor will give you the required logbook endorsement to take the FAA Private Pilot knowledge exam. This ground training will also be logged in your logbook to meet the requirements for the Private Pilot check-ride.
SCHEDULE
The course consists of 20 total hours of ground school spread over ten 2-hour sessions. We will work with the interested students to determine the schedule that works best for everyone. The schedule would be set at the beginning of the course.

ATTENDANCE AND EXPECTATIONS
FAR 61.105 does not set a minimum number of hours required for Private Pilot ground training. Ultimately it falls on the instructor to review the knowledge of the student seeking their endorsement for the Private Pilot Knowledge Test. We expect this to be taken seriously and everyone to do well, however, we understand that life happens. If you have to miss a class session, please let the instructor know ahead of time and we can reschedule a make-up lesson to cover the material that was discussed.
NOT REQUIRED BUT BENEFICIAL
- Online test question app – There are several that are good, some are free. Kem will make a recommendation. http://www.sheppardair.com/ has a good one if you call.
- 1-2 hours in the Redbird simulator with the instructor to reinforce the principles. Redbird is $70/hour plus instructor $55/hour.
